9-1-1 Addressing

Why do I need an 9-1-1 address?

Primarily, to assist emergency services in responding to emergency calls.  An 9-1-1 address helps emergency responders to locate residents.  A faster response time can make a significant difference in survival and degree of recovery.  However, 9-1-1 location addresses are also often required for phone service, building permits, driver license renewals, land titles, loans, mail delivery, utility services, insurance companies and for other purposes requiring a site location.

What is an 9-1-1 address?

An 9-1-1 address is a site specific, locatable address.  An 9-1-1 address is assigned using a mileage measurement to driveway on a named road.  A 9-1-1 NENA (National Emergency Number Association) standardized measuring system standard is used.

People placing 9-1-1 emergency calls often have difficulty providing their addresses.  Children, visitors, hearing or speech impaired callers, or callers in a life threatening situation, may not be able to provide address information to dispatchers.  9-1-1 automatically gives the dispatchers the address, allowing them to send the appropriate fire, medical personnel, or law enforcement, even if the caller is unable to communicate.

To assist emergency services, post your 9-1-1 numbers at the entrance to your driveway, on your residence or mailbox.  Numbers need to be visible from the road and should be 3″ to 6″ high with a contrasting background.  People living on shared private access roads should post road names to improve emergency response time.

With the exception of North Beaver Township all addresses in Lawrence County are issued by the Department of Planning and Community Development.

All addressing requests are on a first come, first serve basis. Requests can take 2 weeks to process.  The Lawrence County Department of Public Safety does not answer addressing related questions via telephone or in person.  Their primary function is to provide emergency telecommunications services and emergency management services to the residents and emergency responders of Lawrence County.  Their staff is unable to disrupt these activities to answer addressing related questions.

An Address Verification Letter will be returned to the Applicant. It is the Applicant’s responsibility to inform all relatives and acquaintances, telephone and utility providers, financial institutions, credit companies, and any other necessary agencies/companies of any address change.

We cannot confirm anything regarding the NAME of the occupant or property owner.  This information must be obtained through other services such as the Lawrence County Assessor’s Office, the postal service or other means.  Addresses are subject to change.
